Atharvashikha Upanishad

The Atharvashikha Upanishad () or Atharvashikhopanishad is one of the 108 Upanishads, Hindu scriptures. It is among the 31 Upanishads associated with the Atharvaveda, and written in the voice of the Sage Atharvan, one of the authors of the ''Atharvaveda''. It belongs to the Shaiva sect, which worships the god Shiva. Atharvan explains the spirituality behind chanting and meditation of the Om. Om is equated to Shiva as Sadashiva (Shiva as the Supreme Being) – who is elevated to Supreme God by the identification with Om, while the four syllables of Om are equated to various deities like Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra, the destructive aspect of Shiva.
The ''Atharvashikha Upanishad'' is presented in two sections, with Section 1 dealing with what is meant by Om and the significance of its syllables, and Section 2 dealing with the benefits one derives by meditating coupled with reciting the word Om representing the four Vedas and the abode of the divinities.〔 According to this Upanishad, utterance and hearing of Om mantra will usher everything that is beneficial.
The word "Atharvashikha" as “Tip of the Atharvan” and resembles the name of ''Atharvashira Upanishad'', with covers similar topics. The ''Atharvashikha Upanishad'' is said to be a duplicate of the ''Atharvashira Upanishad'', from which it reproduces verbatim some topics and expands on the other aspects covered by it.
==Invocation==
The Upanishad’s invocation is addressed to the devas – Indra, Sun, and Garuda as destroyer of evil. Brihaspati too is invoked to bestow health, prosperity and peace. Meditation of Om with its unique syllables is ordained to be recited with devotion as it reveals the “ultimate truth”, with its fourth leg in particular, called the “Thureeya of Thureeyas”, leading to a state of realising God, after overcoming the “three states of wakefulness, sleep and dream.”〔
